Organo was initially set up with the objective of providing complete marketing support to the farmers of Darjeeling. But, with members in our team having Doctorates in Botany, with years of experience researching the growth, productivity and medicinal properties of various medicinal plants like Swertia chirata, Panax pseudoginseng, Gloriosa superba, Rubia cordifolia, Acorus calamus, Piper longum, found in the Himalayas, we decided to share this knowledge with the farmers.

Our Services

Today, we not only provide support in terms of marketing but also with production right from determining the nature of the soil in the fields and finalizing of medicinal plants best suited for the soil type and geographical conditions. Further, we also help the farmers’ source good quality planting materials, arrange for workshops to teach them the right methods of cultivation, taking care of crops and harvesting. We regularly visit the fields to sort any issues that the farmers might have with cultivation and provide all the necessary support that the farmers might require. This helps us to ensure that the plants grown are of very high quality and, consistency is met in terms of production. 

Our efforts have resulted in us cultivating medicinal plants, which are in very high demand in the world market, but fast going extinct because of excessive collection from the wild by ruthless traders who lure the local youth to collect it for them for money, with practically no effort in planting them back.

Our Facilities

Research Laboratory: We have a research laboratory where research on plant tissue culture, biotechnology, biochemistry and seed technology are being carried out. A team of researchers are presently involved in technology development relating to medicinal plant and horticulture. Transfer of technology “from the lab to the land” and training of farmers in micro-propagation techniques and seed technology are programmes undertaken by the laboratory.

Herbarium: A herbarium of local plants has been established for reference. Our aim is to preserve all the medicinal plants available in the Eastern Himalayan region in due course of time. 

Medicinal Plant Repository: A repository of high value medicinal plants available in the Himalayan region has been established at our nursery at Permaguri (1950 mts. Amsl.), about 25 kms from Darjeeling town. The repository represents an in-situ gene bank that aims to conserve the high value medicinal plants of the region.

Besides the gene bank, a farmer’s demonstration field forms the other part of the nursery where farmers training, field trails, etc, are carried out. The nursery also has a green house and an agro-net shed for hardening of cultured plants.

Agro-techniques for Medicinal and Aromatic Plants: A standardized method has been developed by us for extension programmes at the village level. Three medicinal plants namely, Chirata, Gloriosa and Pipla (Piper longum) have been selected and a detailed agro-technique for cultivation has been developed.

Our Belief

We believe that everyone associated with Organo right from our customers to the farmers to our suppliers and the production unit team, are equally important to us. No one is too big or too small for us and we make every effort to treat them equally and with respect. We know that without the contribution of any one of them, Organo would not have been what it is today. Without the farmers and the production team, we would not have been able to deliver on quality, consistency and timeliness and without our customers; we would not have been able to deliver on marketing. Most importantly, we would not have gotten up each morning and looked forward to coming to work.

We are a team that also believes strongly in the power of the Internet. We depend on it greatly for many of our marketing efforts.
