Darjeeling

DarjeelingDarjeeling is a small town situated in the foothills of the Himalayas in West Bengal in India. The name "Darjeeling" is derived from the two Tibetan words Dorje which means “thunderbolt" and ling which means "place", translating to "The land of the thunderbolt."

Darjeeling was developed as a hill station during the British Raj for its British residents to escape from the summer heat of the plains. Today, Darjeeling is  internationally famous for its tea industry and the toy train - the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World heritage site.

Darjeeling has several British-style public schools, which attract students from different parts of India and its neighboring countries.

Darjeeling has a temperate climate with five distinct seasons: spring, summer, autumn, winter and, the monsoons. Summers are mild, with maximum temperatures rarely crossing 25 °C (77 °F). The monsoon season is characterized by intense torrential rains which often cause landslides that block Darjeeling's land access to the rest of the country. In winter temperature averages 5–7 °C (41–44 °F). Occasionally the temperatures drop below zero resulting in snowfall.
